About

Ms. Edgens is the Library Media Specialist at East Nashville Magnet Middle and is proud to have held that position for the past 7 years. She's a born-and-raised Nashvillian and an alum of MLK Magnet. She attended college at New York University, earning a B.S. in Media, Culture, and Communication. She spent 4+ years on the marketing team of a small children's educational publisher while attending graduate school part-time to earn her Masters in Library Science from Queens College. After nine years in New York, she convinced her New York-born husband to move South to warmer climates. Outside of school, Ms. Edgens loves to travel, hike, read, paint, and watch movies with her husband and 2-year-old daughter.

Checkout Rules:

• Students may check out up to 3 items at a time.
• Only 1 of these items can be a DVD or Playaway.
• Books and Playaways can be checked out for 2 weeks.
• DVDs can be checked out for 1 week only.
• Students may not check out additional items if there are overdue or lost items on their account.

**Due to the higher cost of Playaway replacement ($50-70 on average) in the case of damage or loss, parents have the option to opt-out of Playaway check-out for their student(s). If you would rather your student opt out, please contact Ms. Edgens directly.

Lost/Damaged Items:

Students are responsible for treating materials with care. Please keep them away from food, liquids, pets, and destructive younger siblings! If an item is returned damaged, all efforts will be made to repair the damage. If the item cannot be repaired, the student/parent will be responsible for payment towards a replacement. If an item is lost, the student/parent will be responsible for payment towards a replacement.

At the end of each semester, report cards will be held for students that have outstanding fines due to lost or overdue items. Report cards will be released upon return of the item or payment.

Visiting the Library:

The library is open all day, every day! Students must have a pass from a teacher to enter the library during class time. Students may visit the library between classes, but late notes will not be written. The Library will also be open before school at 7:45 and after school until 3:15 unless Ms. Edgens has a conflict.

Teachers may send 2 students to the Library at a time using designated Library passes. You may send groups of students with the permission of Library staff. (Please just call first!) To schedule class time in the library, contact Ms. Edgens.

Collection Development:

The purpose of our school library media center is to provide developmentally appropriate instructional materials and recreational materials so that each student has the potential to develop to the best of his or her ability, mentally exploring the widest possible opportunities. The collection should support the curriculum in all disciplines as well as provide a common body of knowledge.

To build our collection, we consider requests from students, parents, and faculty. Final purchasing decision is made by the Library Media Specialist. The East MS Library aims to provide materials that support the curricular and entertainment needs of our students. Criteria considered in the selection process include: age-level appropriateness, timeliness, accuracy, adequacy, predicted popularity, and connection to classroom instruction.

The East MS Library's collection development policy coincides with the district policies per MNPS Library Services. These policies are available in full on the Library Services website.

Limitless Libraries

All MNPS students have access to the Nashville Public Library's collections through Limitless Libraries, a partnership that provides students the delivery and return of requested NPL items directly through their school library.

**Please keep in mind: If you have more than $20 of lost-item fees on your Limitless Libraries/Nashville Public Library account, you will not be able to check out items from the public library!

Challenges:

The East MS Library aims to support the wide range of interest, ability, and maturity levels present in our student body. Items are selected with careful consideration to the appropriateness for all students, but items do often have intended audiences. Students, if you are ever made uncomfortable by an item in our collection, please inform the Library staff. Parents, please check what your children are reading and watching, and inform the Library staff of any concerns regarding your particular child.

Any student, parent, or teacher may challenge an item by formally contacting the Library staff with a request for re-evaluation. Challenged items will then be reevaluated by Library staff, faculty, and administration in accordance with district-wide policies.

Computer Use Policy:

Library computers are available for students' academic use. Playing games and other off-task activities are NOT permitted during the school day. Students who do not use library computers appropriately will have their privileges revoked.

East Nashville Magnet Middle School's policy for technology use is in direct accordance with the district-wide MNPS Technology Acceptable Use Policy. This policy can be found, in full, on the MNPS website.

Parents may prevent their student from accessing the Internet on MNPS computers by completing the Technology Opt-Out Form found in the Permissions Portal of the MNPS Handbook.

Confidentiality of Patron Records Policy:

Student library and circulation records are considered identifying student data and are handled in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Details of FERPA are available from the MNPS Handbook.
